The Splendid Indian Closet Fashion Tour 2014 is a multi-day event, showcasing collections from Indian couturiers in The United States. This year (July 2014) the event was held in the big Apple, New York and included noted and talented designers like Suneet Varma, Jaya Misra and Siddartha Tytler. I think this event is a great way for Indian designers to reach an international audience, which is why I wanted to share it with you today.
It is human nature to be curious of other cultures and to try different types of foods, music, clothing styles and so on. A lot of designers from the European and American runways show their curiosity of oriental design by creating items or entire collections influenced by these (oriental) cultures. As much as I love those designs I also think; instead of having western artists replicate Indian or oriental design, it is a lot better to invite oriental designers to the west to showcase their designs live. Who better to show Indian craftsmanship than the Indian craftsmen themselves!
From time to time I browse the web in search of designers to feature. Last time I saw images from an African fashion week, which included colorful and creative designs celebrating African culture by merging it with contemporary design. It would be great if one day we’d have some kind of fashion world cup. Imagine if all those designers from different countries started touring the world, showcasing all their different fashion styles just like footballers show their football skills during the World Cup Football. It would be a great way to celebrate world fashion!
I am glad that, there are several Indian designers who go abroad to showcase their designs. I hope one day they decide to visit my homecountry: The Netherlands. I would be camping outside the ticket office to get front row seats!
I included a few images from the different designer shows. Suneet Varma is definitely one to watch, his recent collection showcased at BMW India Bridal Fashion Week 2014 was a great success. His collection ‘The Princess of Shekhawati’ is worth a Google and make sure you check out the look actress Kangana Ranaut wore, a real showstopper!
