During the latest India Fashion Summit 2013 Delhi based designer Dolly J received the award for most promising fashion designer of the year. Dolly J decided to change careers four years ago, moving her career as an architect and painter to second place, making fashion her first priority. This career move turned out to be a great success, Dolly’s designs can be seen seasonally on the runway during Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week and her garments can be purchased at different premium stores in India.
Dolly J designs both traditional Indian bridal wear and Indo Western clothing. She loves to experiment with textiles and often explores the rich diversity of textiles that the different regions of India have to offer. While her bridal wear collection includes traditional Indian gowns, embroidered with classic floral designs, her Indo Western collection fuses classic Indian with modern western silhouettes. Her Indo Western collection consists of ready to wear dresses, skirts, blouses and trousers and a few artistic haute couture items. Dolly J has a background in fine arts which shows in her designs, some of her items are daring and artistic while others are the perfect merge of classic Indian embroidery with clean western style. Her designs are very feminine and accentuate the waistline, creating an hourglass silhouette. I like how she plays with different styles, her latest summer/spring collection displays an array of deep and bright colors and long length gowns, while some of her older collections have a very fresh European style going on. This only shows her diversity and potential as a designer, which makes me very curious about her future collections. My favorite items from the gallery below are the bright yellow palazzo pants and the red embroidered pants combined with a silver sleeveless silky top.
