The rise and rise of talented, twenty-something, Indian fashion designers…Young designers like Arpita Mehta, Payal Singhal and Ridhi Mehra have wowed crowds with their debut fashion shows and follow up with successful collections. These young designers are like a breath of fresh air. The Indian fashion scene knows an large amount of established Indian designers who produce traditional Indian clothing styles; heavy fabrics, colorful ensembles embellished with heavy, intricate embroidery. What I love about the next-gen designers is that they cater to a young and fashion forward clientele. European, contemporary influences go hand in hand with traditional Indian esthetics. The result is stylish, East meets West design, appealing to an international crowd.
Ridhi Mehra & Atelier Mon
Ridhi Mehra is known for her modern approach to Indian fashion. She is a promising designer who started her fashion career in 2011. Today she dresses the fashionista’s from young Bollywood, like fashion it-girl Sonam Kapoor and actress Deepika Padukone.
Her latest collection features handcrafted jewelry by Atelier Mon. Atelier Mon was founded by chief designer Monica Sharma. The Atelier uses perfectly faceted and rough, natural semi precious and precious gemstones blended with 24 karat gold and sterling silver plating for their designs. Their debut runway appearance was during a season of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week and they have been the to-go-to brand for fashionable statement jewelry ever since.
Indigo Ora
Ridhi Mehra chose a deep blue, indigo color for this collection combined with lighter shades of blue and crisp white. This color palette gives this collection a Mediterranean feel, it reminds me of the white house’s with blue rooftops in Santorini, Greece. The designs are decorated with large floral motifs, appliqué work and sequins. This resort collection is perfect for late spring and summer. The long-length anarkali gowns and contemporary sari creations are my absolute favorites from this collection. The Atelier Mon jewelry pieces really compliment the gowns and finish off the different looks. I’m in love with the statement pieces influenced by traditional Indian jewelry designs. A signature Atelier Mon piece is an ear cuff in the shape of a flower, a real must have! I instantly fell in love with these when they appeared on the runway during a PCJ Delhi Couture Week show from Gaurav Gupta in 2013. This collection also features wrist cuffs, bracelets, head jewelry, earrings and neck pieces. The pieces include fresh water pearls, handpicked Lapis Lazuli and Chalcedony gemstones and other precious metals.
This beautiful collection is a Fashion Orientalist favorite and is available at Pernia’s Pop Up Shop (perniaspopupshop.com)
