Fashion, like art, is a way to express yourself or to make a statement. The brand that has attracted my attention this week is taking ‘revolutionairy chic’ to the next level. African Fashion label Aliakim makes an important statement by raising awareness and designing clothes that empower women. Designer Mikaila Brown blends fashion with activism and uses her designer collections to artistically raise awareness to current world affairs. Proceeds from her new Enlisted collection will benefit SOS Village in Southern Sudan, an organization that takes in child soldiers that have lost their families in civil war between Northern and Southern Sudan. The organization provides these children with education and counseling. A serious topic, but beautiful cause to contribute to. I feel more fashion labels should follow lead to inspire change.
The collection is a combination of clothing and accessories, modern silhouettes inspired by African culture. Funky prints, crop tops, figure hugging skirts and dresses, peplum tops and more. An overall fierce and funky collection including some great pieces for the summer holidays. The brand is aimed at cosmopolitan women who are strong and confident and express their femininity and political beliefs through fashion.
Tip: This summer the daring amongst us will be rocking skimpy crop tops. Why not show off those abs you’ve been working on in the gym by sporting one of Aliakim’s bold colored crop tops at the beach? Make a nineties inspired fashion statement while you play beach volley with your friends!
