‘Who run the world?’ Girls! On the 8th of March it was international women’s day and as you may have noticed; my blog has only featured male designers up till now. Shame on me! So before I start focusing on two very important fashion events in India for the two coming weeks; Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (Autumn/Winter collections 2013 – 13th of March until the 17th of March) and Lakme Fashion Week (Summer Resort collection 2013 – 22nd of March until the 26th), it is time to make a change and throw in some female empowerment. Today I bring you a feature on the internationally known, female fashion designer Reem Acra.
Acra was born in Lebanon and inherited her creativity from her grandmother who was active in the art scene. Reem Acra studied fashion in Beirut, New York and Paris and was discovered by a fashion editor in Beirut who was taken by a gown Acra made out of her mother’s dining room tablecloth. Reem launched her fashion business in 1997 and has designed many eye catching bridal collections and red carpet gowns for famous celebrities and royalty. Reem Acra’s design philosophy is described by her official website as;
‘The designer’s collections are a direct reflection of her design philosophy that poetically combines her appreciation for the traditional and classic with the modern fashion needs of today’s woman of style.’
Amongst the celebrities Acra has designed gowns for is Kristen Stewart, who wore a pretty white/crème, strapless number for the 85th Academy Awards show. Miss Stewart gave the gown a little extra media attention by accessorizing it with crutches, having had a little accident prior her appearance at the Oscars. It is proof that Reem Acra can even make an injured movie starlet shine on a red carpet.
Reem Acra’s designs compliment the feminine shape and are either gracious and angelic or regal, fierce and sexy.
