Ometeo, a play on Ometeotl. A name used to refer to the pair of Aztec deities Ometecuhtli and Omecihuatl. Ometeotl translates to two gods. They were thought of as being simultaneously male and female and represented the creative energy or essence from which the power of all other gods flowed.
Scholars interpret the name Ometeotl as Lord of Duality. This duality forms the basis for Rami Kadi’s fall/winter couture collection. Gender fluid, a dynamic mix of man and woman. This collection challenges expectations. The designs are fierce & loud, heavily influenced by men’s tailoring with textile patterns, checkers, tweed, plaid, flaps, pockets and collars. The bold colours and patterns from Aztec art also play a part in Rami Kadi’s gender show.
Ometeo is a celebration of masculinity and femininity. Men’s tailoring is reimagined and made glamorous. Suit style dominates. Waistcoats become corsets. The edgy cuts of men’s blazers and shirts collide with the smooth cuts of dresses.
Rami’s fascination for technology is also present. The laser cut 3D effect holographic sequins are every photographers dream. With the right light it shows a rainbow coloured reflection. Luxurious and timeless materials go hand in hand with 21st century rebels like aluminium foil, bullet metal and plastic. Intergalactic and psychedelic are the words that come to mind when reviewing this collection.
But it wouldn’t be a Rami Kadi couture collection if it didn’t include a few fairy-tale-like gowns. Amongst all the fierceness and empowerment there is also romance (it’s the feather details and soft shades that give it away).
Rami Kadi delivers yet another innovative collection, showcasing his immaculate craftsmanship, diversity and creativity. This season he is making a statement by playing with modern day trends like gender fluidity.
My favourite look from this collection is the mustard chequered embellished tailored blazer with black and white Swarovski stones, as it perfectly shows off the theme, the masculinity of the blazer, but worn as a dress, expressing femininity.
