Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is a festival celebrated by Hindu’s all over the world. Families clean their houses and put on a set of new clothes and lit clay lamps (a dia) with oil. This light symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. In some countries firecrackers are fired to drive away evil spirits (similar to Chinese new year fireworks). Diwali is a beautiful time to spend with family, to share a meal and sweets together and enjoy tradition. My personal experience with this festival is slightly different as a person of mixed culture, but still an important tradition where quality time is shared with loved ones. I wanted to share a Diwali special with you today, to celebrate. Because it is a fashion site, it means I present another beautiful collection with you of a special designer. Wishing everyone a very happy diwali and those who do not celebrate, a very lovely day.
The Violet Garden by Arpita Mehta
Young and talented designer Arpita Mehta made her debut at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter-Festive 2013 in august. She caught the attention of the Indian press and fashionistas with her skilled and well executed designs. Her collection ‘The Violet Garden’ plays with different shades of violet, purple and green combined with a touch of gold. It consist of traditional Indian styles, like sari’s and modern versions of the lehenga and anarkali dresses. Floral and geometric prints go hand in hand and give the designs a modern, Mediterranean feel. Arpita Mehta distinguishes herself from other designers with her trademark embroidery style. Her use of intricate embroidery consisting of vibrant anchor threads and mirrorwork, used in innovative ways, gives an extra dimension to her designs. Such craftsmanship is rare in my opinion, her ability to create a signature look and trademark style at such a young stage sets her apart from other designers. Arpita Mehta graduated in apparel manufacture and dress design from S.N.D.T University and moved on to make her fashion dream come true by working for India’s leading designer Manish Malhotra as an intern for two years. After this experience she launched her own label ‘Arpita Mehta’.
I feel we got a very talented designer on our hands. Her collection is young, vibrant, glamorous and feminine and I am in love with the mirrorwork embroidery. The silhouettes are very glamorous, some very daring and sexy others more modest and flirty. The embroidery makes her designs a must have. I adore the use of color and the fixed theme for this collection. ‘The Violet Garden’ is a lovely collection and I can’t wait to see more from this designer in the near future. Until then, check out the gallery to admire some of her beautiful designs.
