Manish Malhotra unveiled his latest collection ‘Portraits’ during India Couture Week on the 19th of July. In India, haute couture is all about bridal wear which differs from haute couture fashion weeks in the West. A lot of designers in the West focus on luxurious, extravagant eveningwear when it comes to haute couture. They often close their shows with one showstopper bridal look, which takes everyone’s breath away.
Indian’s are known to pull out all the stops when it comes to weddings. Manish’s collection ‘Portraits’ is all about the magic of a bride’s most special moments. Malhotra caters to the neo-bride with this collection; an individualistic and elegant woman who embraces both tradition and modernity. The embroidery from this collection is exquisite: Kashmiri Zari coupled with ivory thread-work, old world mirror work and cleverly arranged sequins. Fun fact: some of the detailing has taken over four months to develop! Fabrics used for this collection are velvet and silk. I adore the color palette ranging from soft shades of beige, gold and salmon pink to rust orange and red. The color palette and intricate embroidery give this collection a regal look. While the embroidery is very much traditional, the silhouettes and styles are very modern.
I have featured three of my favorite designs in the gallery. The first look is very bold with white embroidery all over, combined with silver mirror work and other embellishments. This contemporary look could easily be featured in an international haute couture week. The color combination of the second look works very well. I adore the dupatta (scarf) with sequin detail. You do not need any jewellery for these looks, the embellishments do the talking! Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt walked the ramp for Manish Malhotra in a stunning red lehenga (skirt, blouse, scarf ensemble). What a showstopper! This dress was made for Alia. The 21 year old actress looked very graceful. The bright, red color of this dress along with the intricate embroidery makes it an eye-catcher. This look is very young and trendy, which is why it suits the young actress very well.
